Join us as we embark on our long awaited family vacation to ICELAND! I have been asked many times how it is we chose Iceland for our destination. For me, I have always been fascinated by this seemingly remote and exotic location. When television shows or movies would show scenes from Iceland, I would always stop and watch with wonder. I also wanted to pick a place where Michael would enjoy and find magical, as well as an experience he would remember for his entire life. Truly, where else could a boy go to see volcanoes and glaciers and lava fields and icebergs and mountains and the arctic sea and whales and puffins and seals and maybe even a polar bear, all in one place?!

This trip has been in the planning stages for a year and a half now. It is in celebration of mine and Mike's 10th wedding anniversary, my 40th birthday, Michael's 10th birthday, and the completion of my doctoral classes. It is also a welcomed break after the hard work and sacrifice of three years of coursework and a much needed break before the dreaded comprehensive exams and dissertation!
My purpose in writing this blog, first and foremost, is to record our trip for myself and my family to look back on when the memories start to fade (did I mention above that I am now 40? Do I need to connect those dots to memory???). Friends and family have commented during the years how wonderful it is that we take so many adventures together as a family. Believe it or not, while I am pretty skilled at planning our trips and executing them in amazing ways, I am really lousy at recording these trips for future posterity. With Michael turning double-digits this year and us realizing that our remaining years of family travel are quickly growing shorter, I wanted to find a way to start recording and reflecting on these wander-ful experiences we have together as a family. Also, knowing what it has taken us to be able to go on such a once-in-a-lifetime trip, I know many people will not have the same opportunity. So, I wanted all of our friends and family to experience the joys of wandering Iceland along with us!
So, please join us as we embark on this epic adventure! I plan to post pictures and stories of our trip each day. I also hope to convince Michael to write something everyday too, so he can look back down the road on his thoughts and experiences while in Iceland. Maybe, if we get really lucky, Mike will be able to post some drone footage as we go. I am most looking forward to what my incredibly talented husband does with his drone videos and spectacular photography.
The journey begins soon! I hope you all join in! Keep a look-out for our next post!
Enjoy, be curious, taste new dishes, shake the hand of unknown people, touch the ice in the arctic, stay away of polar bears and come back with warm smiles not "arctic smiles."
ReplyDeleteHope the flight was easy! Can't wait to hear about day 1 in Reykjavik. xoxo

ReplyDeleteHello I hope you are having fun. Is it too coooold?
ReplyDeleteNot too cold, in the 40's. More wet than anything. It has rained on and off all day. We only saw a sliver of blue sky today. Luckily we have our rain gear with us so it didn't bother us any.
