DAY 1: REYKJAVIK, Part 1

Wednesday, May 24, 2017: We departed from Orlando International Airport at 7:30pm. Our happy faces as we departed for the airport yesterday.

Our not quite so happy faces after being dropped off at the wrong terminal from the long-term parking lot shuttle (we told the driver he was wrong but he insisted that we were wrong) and waiting in a very hot (apparently due to the rain) correct terminal after a long, sweaty walk.

SOOOO excited to be on the plane after a short delay due to weather.

The lights on the plane during the flight were set to look like the northern lights. It was very cool. The plane was nice and fairly comfortable. I was nervous about a 7 hour flight since I had never taken a flight that long before. For me, 7 hours felt no different than 3 hours since we had individual televisions and could choose from a lot of different entertainment options. I should have been more worried about the fact that the flight was a red eye. We left Orlando at 7:30pm and landed at 5:55am Iceland time (4 hours ahead of our time). None of really slept. We were pretty tired when we landed.

Thursday, May 25, 2017: Snuggling in the Airbnb we are calling home until Saturday. It is a very nice apartment right in the heart of Reykjavik. We can walk everywhere.

After a much needed 2 hour nap, we ventured out into Reykjavik for some lunch. We all had the "meat soup." It was a cream based soup made with beef, lamb, veggies, and potatoes. It was delicious! And the coffee (European espresso, really) was fantastic. Food is VERY expensive over here, so we are on a mission to eat as reasonably as possible while not depriving ourselves (there is no tipping, so that helps some). Lunch Cost: $18 for each soup bread bowl and $5 for the coffee. The $59 was well worth it because we all loved it!

Michael pretending he is a viking.

The famous concert hall, Harpa. It was impressive and beautiful. Even Michael thought it was cool.

Michael's rock tower (apparently building these is a thing because there were tons of them along the "beach").

A cool metal art piece of a viking ship.

The famous Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik. It was beautiful.

We were lucky enough to hear the choir practicing for a concert. The sound was amazing!

From Michael:

Don't pet Icelandic cats. The end.

He pet the cat one time and the cat turned on him and scratched him.
